#9: The Strongest Woman I Know
Dec. 24th, 2009 10:14 amThis is an easier question than it sounds. The strongest woman I know was my former First Officer, Number One. She has a name, but she can't stand it, so I won't repeat it here.
I met her when I took command of the Yorktown, in 2249. She'd been XO for almost two years by that point. I was wary of her at first, after hearing the stories about her from other captains. They said she was cold, straight laced, and efficient. The joke was that's the reason they chose her for the ship's computer voice for the fleet.
The first thing I noticed that flew in the face of all of that were her fingernails. They changed color every other day, never a traditional color either. My favorite was the metallic blue, it matched her eyes.
Number One's service record was exemplary, on par with Spock's. She worked hard, and as a result promoted to Commander in just under eight years. Not as fast as my promotion to Captain, but not too shabby. She proved that she was able to hack it with the men on every bridge she served on, and every captain she served under. She was the best XO in the fleet. I saw her survive more things than anyone should have to. Impressive is an understatement.
When I was offered command of the Enterprise in 2253, I asked her to come with me. By that point, we'd gotten to know each other very well and learned some things about ourselves from each other. She made me a better commander. She's one of the few Officers I consider a close friend.
