Pike heard, rather than saw the heavy miners boots retreat from the vicinity of his half submerged platform. He told them the defense codes. They were en route to Earth, if not there already. They were done with him. This was the end of it all, the great Christopher Pike was going to rot in a mining ship. He hoped they'd have the decency to just shoot him.
After he was confidant they were not coming back, he let his eyes close...what he saw surprised him.
